Abstract Objective The objective of this study was to identify factors with a high degree of association with functional difficulty (DF) in the Brazilian elderly population, through the National Health Survey (PNS-2013). Material and method A cross-sectional, quantitative study with a data source from the PNS-2013, considering the total sample of individuals aged 60 or over (n = 23,815). For the analysis, two dependent variables were considered: Basic Activities of Daily Living and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, and 30 independent variables related to sociodemographic and oral health conditions. The Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis software was used to perform the analyzes. Initially, the data set was balanced and the dimensionality reduction test was carried out, using the 10 Fold cross validation method. Finally, the variables related to the dependent variables were evaluated through logistic regression. Result The results point to the direct association between the DF of the elderly with: age aspects mainly for octogenarians (ABVD OR = 2.19 and AIVD OR = 2.82) and later, elderly without schooling (AIVD OR = 1.96), those who did not (AIVD OR = 1.65), and aspects of oral health, such as: presence of difficulty to feed due to problems with teeth or prostheses (ABVD OR = 1.73 and AIVD OR = 1.59), non-consultation with a dental surgeon throughout life (ABVD OR = 1.69) and absence of natural teeth (AIVD OR = 1.64). Conclusion Based on the findings, the importance of the strengthening of preventive strategies directed at the portion of individuals with 60 or more years, including oral health, is emphasized.
