Abstract We describe Brazilian journals specialized in Geriatrics and Gerontology. Data was collected from the Portal de Revistas Científicas available on the Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information’s homepage (Bireme) and from the Reference and Documentation Center on Aging, at the Open University for Studies on the Elderly, a program of Rio de Janeiro State University which holds the most complete collection of scientific journals in this field. Nine journals, published since 1969, were identified. To analyze them, we adopted the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences database’s criteria for journals selection: content, peer review, editorial committee, regularity of publication, periodicity, time of publication, normalization and layout. Discontinuity marks most of these journals, and three still are being regularly published. A Terceira Idade, published since 1988, is mainly a divulgation journal. Revista Kairós: Gerontologia, issued in 1998, and the Revista Brasileira de Geriatria e Gerontologia(former Textos sobre Envelhecimento), also in 1998, are recent publications, indexed in Lilacs and in process of consolidation for indexation in other databases.
