REFLECTIONS ON SPACE AND SPATIAL SCALES

ABSTRACT This article aims to reflect on the character of space, ontologically as a present reality in the materiality of the social being, and in the theory of knowledge as a philosophical category of analysis of this reality with the diversity of epistemological notions and concepts in the most varied approaches of studies and research. Grounded in dialectical historical materialism, this essay is intended to serve as a contribution to a necessary debate in the critique of geographical studies, and, above all, serve to critique the current social reality. Finally, in the debate against the fragmentation of space and the metrification of spatial scales, we identify the need to analyze the spatial scale based on social practices that produce unequal spaces, resulting mainly from the social division of labor and capital.
