Abstract The article aims to analyze the role of honorary orders in the construction of the Empire of Brazil. The decorations were composed of mantle, medals and bands granted to all who provided services to the State. It constituted an important bargaining chip for the central power to gain support and loyalty. The search for the award made the adhesion to Rio de Janeiro in the different provinces which were incorporated into the Empire of Brazil. Thus, we seek to discuss the relationship between centralization and local authorities in the First Empire by analyzing the services provided to enter into an order.
