AUDIOVISUAL TRANSLATION: STUDIES ON READING OF SUBTITLING FOR DEAF AND HARD-OF-HEARING

Abstract This paper is a literature review on research conducted by members of the group LEAD (Subtitling and Audio description) from the State University of Ceará (UECE) on reading of subtitles by deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers of audiovisual media. These studies are within the theoretical and methodological framework of Acessible Audiovisual Translation (AAVT) and seek a model of Subtitling for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (SDH) that meets the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, contributing to the training of subtitlers and to the accessibility of Brazilian audiovisual media. Likewise, our objective has been to explore how subtitling parameters, validated by the literature of this field, influence the processing of subtitles by deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. The methodologies of these studies range from exploratory to experimental ones based on eye tracking. The most recent results have showed that deaf viewers can process subtitles at what is considered to be a fast rate (180 words per minute) if the parameter of segmentation between line breaks takes place at the highest syntactic node possible, according to what has been attested by the theorists Karamitroglou and Diaz Cintas and Remael.
