Abstract This paper looks at the circulation of Machado de Assis' chronicles through translation into Spanish to verify whether the actions taken in the vernacular edition are reproduced in the translated edition. The hypothesis is that certain editorial and translational strategies connect the chronicle to the realm of the short-story, a genre which, in the case of Machado de Assis, has been translated more than the chronicle. Firstly, this work discusses the peculiarities of the translation of printed writings related to journalism and the editorial reconfigurations they undergo in the process of moving from newspaper to book format, as seen in Páginas recolhidas (1899): choosing texts that are separate from the original context; adding titles; cutting passages from the text that are related to the context; and eliminating the date of publication. The article then analyzes Crónicas escogidas (Selected Chronicles) (2008), the only volume of Machado de Assis's chronicles translated into Spanish, on both the paratextual and micro-textual level.
